In 1997 the HP company was among the top 3 of personal computer manufactures. However, due to strong competition in the market such as Dell and the Asia crisis in the following year (1998) HP company lose its limelight on the top as one of the leading company. During that crisis, Lewis Platt was the CEO, and he hired a consultant to determine the problem of HP company. The consultant suggested to appoint an outsider CEO with marketing and sales expertise that could emanate charisma, that could allure the public that could boost the company’s profile. The board decided to hire a new CEO Carly Fiorina in May 1999.
