Hollywood has a long history of showing disturbing images of both Asians and Latinos. Using Gina Marchetti’s article about “Yellow Peril” as well as Ramirez Berg’s article about latino image history, I wish to show some of the surprising commonalities regarding historical and contemporary bias seen in Hollywood images of Asian- descended and Mexican descended Americans. For Asians and Hispanic performers, I will show that even in the midst of stereotyping, they can assert and agency and humanity that transcends their scripts. Specially my paper will discuss “Madame Butterfly” (1995), The Bronze Screen (2002), Selena (1998), and “How to be a Latin Lover (2017).
