COMPUTER ARCHITECTURE: Computer architecture details how specific computer components come together, in terms of design and compatibility. Computer architecture will help determine the user’s needs and fulfill those requirements by creating a design based on those requirements. There are three categories of computer architecture: system design, instruction set architecture (ISA), and microarchitecture. System design deals with all hardware components with the exception of the CPU. It also includes memory controllers and data paths. The ISA is the programming language of the CPU. This determines what the CPU is capable of doing based on the program given to it and its ability to process and interpret that program. The microarchitecture determines the way that data travels and is processed, as well as how they are implemented in the ISA 1.

The control unit is tasked to read instructions from memory and after the instructions are interpreted, they are executed. The arithmetic logic unit manages all the logical and mathematical operations. The CPU is often considered to be the brain of the computer, as it is the component that processes all the inputs, instructions and information. The CPU allows for peripheral components (i.e. mouse, keyboard, etc.) to be used as these devices send and receive data with each other 2.

I/O DEVICES: Input/output devices, or I/O devices, are devices that are used either by a person or another system in order to communicate with the computer. I/O devices are able to communicate with computer by sending and receiving data to and from a computer 3. I/O device data is bi-directional and these devices are considered to be storage or communication devices. Memory (volatile, non-volatile)
